Men's Ministry Hiking Fellowship
Wahiawa Hills
September 25, 2010
Aloha Everyone,
September’s hike is Wahiawa Hills. It is six miles but takes about 5 hours because of the terrain. The hike would be suitable for intermediate hikers. Meet at the trailhead at 9:00 AM.
Hike Description
The name of the hike pretty much sums up the description. Hills, hills and more hills. The hike is in the Schofield East Range and makes a loop northeast of California Avenue. The trail crosses Kaukonahua Stream (longest stream on Oahu) two times. The second crossing is at a pool deep enough for swimming. No, we don’t have to swim to cross to the other side. If your doctor suggested you get some cardio vascular exercise this the perfect hike for you.
Since the hike is in a training area for the Army the whole place is laced with trails like a web made by a demented spider so we will have to stick together as a group. One mistake could find us a long way from where we parked our cars. One hiker named Robert Lefevre went hiking on the Wahiawa Hills trail on March 23, 2000 and he has not come out yet (true story, Google it). Be prepared to get your feet wet and muddy. Bring a light lunch, a camera, plenty of water, mosquito repellent, and some of your friends.
Directions to Trailhead
From Mililani get on Kamehameha Hwy. (Rte 99) north. Pass Avocado St. and Olive St. then turn right on California Avenue. Park on the street at the end of California Ave. near 2 water tanks. Make sure that you leave room for the bus to make it’s turn and do not block mailboxes or trash bins.
Notes
These hikes are not races so take your time and stay safe. If you want to stop and take pictures feel free to do so. Each hike has a leader and a sweep. The leader has to be near the front to assure we all go the same way but no matter how long you take the sweep will never pass you. You can never be left behind. We will never leave you. If you need to stop let one of us know. The leader and the sweep will be in contact with each other all the way by way of 2 way radio.
A hui hou,
Fred and Micha
